One-man band · Live looping · Miami

Miami’s one-man band: a full band, built live by one musician.

First a beat. Then bass. Then keys. Then he reaches for the harmonica, and the whole room turns around. Willy B builds every layer live, in front of your guests, and solos over the top.

How live looping works

A looper records a short musical phrase and plays it back in perfect time, over and over. Willy plays a drum groove and loops it. Then a bass line on top. Then keys. Now there’s a band.

Over that groove he plays guitar or harmonica, sings, and solos, weaving in and out of songs your guests know. “I’d shred over it,” is how he puts it. He can drop layers out for a quiet verse and stack them back up for the chorus.

Why hosts choose one musician over a band

A band means a stage, a load-in and five people to brief. With Willy you get the fullness of drums, bass and keys with the flexibility of a solo act. He brings his own sound, sized to the room, or works with your venue’s AV.

  • Made for dining rooms, terraces and cocktail hours
  • One person to brief, book and feed
  • Volume that follows the room, from dinner to dancing
  • The show is watching the song get built

What it sounds like

Soul and funk grooves with blues harmonica on top. Americana and country with a Miami accent. R&B, jazz, folk and pop, “with a little bit of sass … some Miami sass,” as he puts it.

Every set is curated to the hosts: the songs they love, the artists their guests grew up on, and nothing from the do-not-play list. Want him to write songs about your guests too? Custom songs.

When you need more than one man

For a packed dance floor that runs past midnight, you may want more musicians. Willy can bring in a second musician or a band of 3 to 7 pieces, books other artists, and can plan the music for the whole event. Event production.

A Miami tradition

One musician filling a room has deep roots here. Timmy Thomas’s “Why Can’t We Live Together,” released on a Miami label in 1972, was a one-man band on record: an organ, an early rhythm machine and his voice. Read the story in the history of music in Miami.

Questions

Good to know

What is a one-man band?

A single musician who plays the parts of a whole band. In Willy B’s case, he loops drums, bass and keys live, then plays guitar or harmonica and sings over them, so one person sounds like a full group.

Is the music live or pre-recorded?

Live. Each layer is played and looped in the moment, in front of your guests. Watching the song come together is part of the show.

How much does a one-man band cost in Miami?

Willy quotes each event personally. The fee depends on the date, how long he plays, the location, and add-ons like songs written about your guests. Ask for a quote.

What does a one-man band need at the venue?

Less than a band, and the details depend on the venue. He brings his own sound, sized to the room, or works with the venue’s AV, and he typically sound-checks before he plays. Outdoors, his gear needs shade or cover, and he has a battery option for boats, beaches and gardens.

Can a looping set be quiet enough for dinner?

Yes. He can run the looping set at conversation level through dinner, then build it up when the room is ready to dance.

Can we choose the songs?

Yes. Tell him the songs and artists you love, and anything to avoid. He curates the set around your list and your guests, and weaves the favorites into the night.

Is a one-man band a good fit for a wedding cocktail hour?

A great one: a full band’s sound from one musician while your guests mingle. See wedding music.
